Retail Cleaning Services
Meet Your Retail Cleaning Provider, Trading Since 1998
Retail cleaning from Double Check Security Group covers shop floors, fitting rooms, stockrooms, washrooms and shopping centre common parts, anywhere in the UK.
Rates run from £20 to £30 an hour excluding VAT. Cleaners are screened to BS 7858, the British Standard for staff working in secure environments. The company has traded since 1998.
What a Contract Covers
See What Shop Cleaning Covers, From Till Point to Stockroom
A retail cleaning contract covers every area your customers see and every area they do not. Both matter, because staff notice the second one and inspectors ask about it.
A standard shop cleaning specification includes:
- Shop floor, aisles and entrance matting
- Till points, counters and card terminals
- Fitting rooms, mirrors and seating
- Display units, shelving and glass
- Washrooms, with consumables restocked
- Stockroom, back of house and staff areas
- Shopping centre common parts, including lifts, handrails and seating
Fitting rooms deserve a line of their own. They are the most commonly skipped area in a shop and the highest risk one, because they hold stock and customers use them unsupervised. Any specification worth signing names them explicitly rather than folding them into customer areas.
Colour coding governs how those areas are worked. BICSc accreditation sets a colour coded cloth and mop system that keeps washroom equipment away from the shop floor. That separation matters most in stores selling loose or unpackaged goods, where one cloth crossing the line becomes a hygiene problem rather than a housekeeping one.
Scheduling
Fit Store Cleaning Around Your Trading Hours
Cleaning can run before you open, during trading, after you close, or across a mix of the three. Which one you pick changes the cost more than your floor area does, and it is worth deciding before you ask anyone for a price.
Before opening
Pre-open clean
The cheapest arrangement. Cleaners arrive shortly before trading, reset the floor and washrooms, and leave as staff arrive. Nobody needs keys or alarm codes, because a manager is on site.
During trading
In-hours clean
Suits large stores and shopping centres where spills and washroom traffic need attention through the day. Uniformed presence on the shop floor becomes part of the job, so cleaners are briefed to work around customers rather than through them.
After closing
Out-of-hours clean
Costs more, and for good reason. Keys change hands, alarm codes get shared, and lone worker arrangements have to be put in place. That is a different contract, not the same contract at a different time.
If you are weighing the options, our guide on choosing between day and night cleaning sets out the trade-offs in more detail.

Pricing
Budget £20 to £30 an Hour, Excluding VAT
Retail cleaning costs between £20 and £30 an hour excluding VAT. Where a site sits in that band comes down to four things.
What moves the figure
What sits underneath the rate Read more Show less
Understanding what sits underneath the rate makes it easier to judge a quote against a cheaper one. Since 1 April 2026 the National Living Wage has been £12.71 an hour (opens in a new tab) for workers aged 21 and over, up from £12.21. On top of the hourly wage sit employer National Insurance, holiday pay, sick cover, equipment, consumables, insurance and supervision. For context, the voluntary Real Living Wage is £13.45 an hour and the London Living Wage is £14.80.
So a quote pitched well under £20 an hour is telling you something. Usually it means fewer hours than the specification needs, or a wage bill that will not survive the next April.
Fifteen minutes on site is usually enough to turn that band into a fixed figure for your store.
The visit takes 10 to 15 minutes and there is no charge for it.
How The Standard Is Held
Expect Cover From a Team of Over 150 Cleaners
Most complaints about cleaning contracts are not about standards. They are about the clean not happening. Somebody called in sick, nobody was sent, and the store opened dirty.
Periodic and Specialist Work
Add Floor Machines, Window Cleaning and Fit-Out Cleans
Daily cleaning keeps a store presentable, but some jobs need equipment and a slot outside the routine. These sit alongside the main contract or run as one-off visits.
A shop fit-out is the other one-off job
After a refit, dust settles into stock and fixtures for weeks unless it is removed properly, so cleans after a shop fit-out are handled as a separate job with its own specification.
Waste separation is now a legal duty
Shops with fewer than ten full time equivalent staff must separate dry recyclables, glass and food waste by 31 March 2027, and plastic film joins the plastic stream for every workplace on the same date, which makes bin provision and collection frequency worth settling when the contract is written.
Who We Clean For
Match Your Store Type to Our Retail Cleaning Contracts
Retail cleaning contracts run across seven store types. Multi-site retailers are covered under one agreement with consistent standards at every branch.

- Ralph Lauren
- The Ned
- Old Spitalfields Market
- Watchfinder
- Wandsworth Council

Landlords and facilities managers form the other half of the picture. Common parts, service corridors and shared washrooms come with their own reporting expectations, and how our cleaning contracts are structured explains how those sit within a wider agreement.

How much do retail cleaning services cost in the UK?
Retail cleaning runs from £20 to £30 an hour excluding VAT. Hours needed, trading hours, store size and equipment requirements decide where a particular site lands. A site visit produces a fixed figure rather than a band.
Do I need to be in the store while cleaning happens?
No. Out-of-hours cleaning is common in retail, and key and alarm code arrangements are set up formally at mobilisation. Holders are recorded, and the record is updated whenever staff change.
What happens if my regular cleaner is off sick?
Cover comes from the wider team rather than from a gap in service. Supervisors can also work the site directly. Absence cover forms part of the contract rather than sitting outside it as a favour.
Can one company handle both cleaning and security for my store?
Yes. Guarding, store detectives and cleaning can run under one agreement with a single account manager. Vetting is handled to the same standard across both, which is usually the reason retailers combine them.
How often should a shop be cleaned?
Daily cleaning suits most stores with regular footfall, with periodic deep cleans layered on top. Smaller or quieter shops often run three days a week. Frequency is set by footfall and floor type rather than by store size alone.
Are your cleaners insured?
Yes. Public liability insurance covers all cleaning work, and certificates are available on request before a contract starts.
